John W. Spencer Jr.

John William Spencer, Jr. went home to be with the Lord on December 4, 2025, leaving an outstanding legacy of life and love that touched many lives. Lumpy, as he was affectionately known to his family and friends, was born on April 14, 1954, in Bridgeton, NJ to the late John W. Spencer Sr. and Rose D. Spencer (nee Bayard). Lumpy accepted Christ into his life at an early age and began his worship at First Baptist Church of Jericho for many years. He went to school in the Deptford Township School District and graduated in 1972, where he was an accomplished athlete in Football, Wrestling and Baseball as well as a talented singer in the Choir. Following Lumpy’s graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served for 4 years, earning the rank of Corporal. During his tour in the Marine Corps, Corporal Spencer served on the Midway-Class Aircraft Carrier the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. While serving on the Aircraft Carrier he was able to travel to Spain, France and Italy. In 1978 Corporal Spencer earned an honorable discharge. Always proud of his Marine Corps Service, Lumpy was a member of the Marine Corps League, Semper Fidelis Detachment #204 and the American Legion Post 133 where he held multiple leadership positions. Lumpy was the epitome of the word hussle, as there was never a job that he was not willing to take on in order to provide for his family. He had a very diverse job history before taking and passing the Civil Service Exam and earning a job with the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office. Lumpy worked 26 years in the Corrections Division at the Gloucester County Jail in Woodbury, NJ. Lumpy held many different positions while working in Corrections, from Cert Team Leader, to PR-24 Teacher to Quarter Master, Lumpy was always a person that one would rely on. Lumpy was blessed to retire from the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office and Corrections in 2010. Lumpy had many hobbies that he loved to share with his friends and family. Lumpy gave back to the community as a coach of Deptford Little League Baseball and Deptford Youth Wrestling. Lumpy had a love for Baseball and was a High School and Collegiate Umpire for many years. As a competitive bowler, you could always find Lumpy bowling in multiple leagues in the South Jersey Area. Lumpy, the Pit Master enjoyed barbecuing with family and friends each and every summer. Lumpy was well known for his famous Egg Nog. Many would put in orders each holiday season to get a taste of his Egg Nog to share with their family and friends. Lumpy’s love of dancing and singing was legendary. You would see Lumpy singing God’s praises as this was one of his biggest passions in life. He was known and respected for his distinctive melodic tone and wide range of voice. Lumpy sang a good portion of his life but was most proud to be a founding member of the Kingdom Heirs Acapella Gospel Group with his father John W. Spencer Jr. for over 20 years. Lumpy was the beloved son of the late John W. Spencer and Rose D. Spencer (nee Bayard). A loving father to his children Calvin (Niki,) and Ginnie Calabrese (Mike). A devoted brother to his siblings, Irvin (Ramona), Valerie, Veronica Lofton (Carnell) and the late Lyetta Spencer (Beverly); Daughter-in law, Tracy Spencer and his very special friend, Christine Huesser. Lumpy was a loving grandfather (GOP) to four grandchildren, Dante, Darius, Demetrius and Milaina. Relatives and friends are invited to visitation on Friday, January 9, 2026 from 4pm to 6pm at The Boucher Funeral Home, 1757 Delsea Dr, Deptford, NJ 08096 Celebration of Life Service 6pm at The Boucher Funeral Home.
