August 21, 1929 - September 9, 2021
Dorothy G. Danzi of Jersey City, formerly of Deptford, NJ passed away on September 9, 2021. She was 92. Born to William Richards and Gertrude Schod on August 21, 1929 in Philadelphia, Dorothy was the oldest of two daughters. She was an excellent student and excelled in her studies but in her Senior year of High School she made the loving decision to leave school to help support her family. While a teen living in Philadelphia, Dorothy, with her mother’s encouragement played hooky from school to go to see a skinny guy from Hoboken, NJ perform at the famed Earle Theatre. And so began Dorothy’s love affair with Frank Sinatra. She would fill her home with his music and enjoyed listening to him serenade her even on her last days. She began her career as a Wrapper at Heidelberger’s Confectionary where she caught the eye of a handsome co-worker at the loading docks, Rocco Danzi. He pursued Dorothy and eventually won her heart. The two were married at St. Boniface Church in Philadelphia on September 18, 1954 so beginning a love that would continue to grow over the next six decades. Dorothy and Rocky settled into their home in Deptford after their wedding and they remained in the home that they loved so dearly until 2010 when they relocated to Jersey City to be closer to family. Dorothy was fiercely committed to her family, always choosing family over personal needs, leaving school to help her family, moving out of her home to make things easier for her husband, always Dorothy chose to do for those she loved. That love for her family was never more evident than when you spoke with her about her children. She was so incredibly proud that both her sons were serving “God and Country” as a Jesuit Priest and a Navy Commanding Officer. Dorothy loved a good meal out and was saddened at the closing of Rita and Joe’s in Jersey City where they treated her like a queen. She enjoyed shopping at Boscov’s, traveling, watching old movies, visits from beautiful friends she had met on a Pilgrimage and listening to Frank and occasionally Bing Crosby when her son could persuade her. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents William and Gertrude Schod; her beloved husband with whom she was fortunate to spend 62 years, Rocco Danzi, Sr. and her sister Elizabeth. She is survived by her devoted sons the Reverend Rocco C Danzi, S.J. and William Danzi and wife Hana of Tennessee and her nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
